Exeter United first appeared around 1890, merging with St. Sidwell's Old Boys in 1904 to form Exeter City.
The new club continued to play at St. James' Park, where Sidwell's had played since 1894.Exeter City 1904

A successful exhibition match between West Bromwich Albion and Woolwich Arsenal was staged to test interest in football, in what was a rugby stronghold, and so Exeter City decided to turn professional in 1908 and joined the Southern League, replacing Tottenham Hotspur.
The club were founder members of Division Three in 1920-21. Exeter then spent over forty years in the basement division before finally winning promotion in 1963-64.
