Exeter maintained their promotion credentials with a comfortable victory against 10-man Tamworth.

Lee Phillips opened the scoring for the Grecians in the first half before Craig Farrell put the result beyond doubt with a second-half brace.

The Lambs were reduced to 10 men just after the hour mark when Smith picked up his second yellow card for a clumsy foul on Jon Challinor.

Tamworth started best in a poor opening. Tristram Whitman was picked out on the edge of the box and struck a shot past the post from a tight angle.

Aaron Brown then fired a free-kick wide from 30 yards for the Lambs, and Trevor Robinson caused problems with a fine run down the left.

Exeter went close to breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute. Jon Challinor scampered into the box and struck the ball against the foot of the post with a powerful shot from 18 yards.

At the other end Whitman shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box after he was found by Bevan's long clearance.

Exeter eventually took the lead just a minute before half time. Dan Woodards fired in a low cross which picked out Phillips inside the box, and when his first shot was parried by the goalkeeper Phillips was in the right place to hammer home the rebound from close range.

After the break Exeter began to take control of the game and always looked like stretching the lead. Phillips had a fine volley from 20 yards superbly saved by the goalkeeper

Exeter put the result beyond any doubt in the 68th minute. Phillips struck a powerful shot which rebounded off the foot of the post before Farrell tapped home the rebound from close range.

They completed the scoring in injury time. Billy Jones swung in a corner, and when Challinor headed the ball against the bar Farrell tapped home the rebound from point- blank range.
