Trial By Letter

The Winchester City midfielder was first highlighted as a possible target for Dolan last week amid stories of Grecian interest in Winchester teammate Andy Forbes. However, whilst any possible deal for the striker is on hold until his return from holiday, 21-year-old Smith has taken the initiative by approaching City himself.

"He sent me a letter, so out of courtesy I contacted him and, as long as it is Ok with his club, I will definitely give him a trial" Dolan explained to the Echo.

The highly-rated former Bournemouth apprentice, a fitness instructor by trade away from football, is out of contract this summer and is keen to further himself higher up the non-league pyramid despite captaining Winchester's successful league campaign which included collecting the FA Vase. Being under 21, he will however command a fee in form of compensation to Winchester. Ultimately, this will be set by tribunal should the two clubs not agree a figure among themselves.

Dolan remains keen.

"I haven't seen him play yet, I have simply had some good reports on him. These are the types of players you have to look at because every now and again you pick out a real gem. We have got to look at every possible avenue to improve our squad."
